Things to do in the rain with kids

It’s raining, it’s pouring, but little ones certainly won’t be snoring with our indoor and outdoor activities.

Things to do in the rain with kids

Did you know there were 172 days of rain last year in the UK? Yep, nearly half a year’s worth! Here’s hoping this year is packed full of fun in the sun but just in case it’s not, here's our handy things to do on a rainy day survival guide.

Indoor ideas

Play a board game, tonies® style!

How does your family decide which Tonies to listen to? Well @howweplayed2day made this clever board game to help with the decision making! Each player rolls the dice and takes a turn. The first Tonie to reach the end is the one you listen to first. (That’s one way to solve the arguments!)

Make musical instruments

Rainy days are made for shaking it off, and our music Tonies are the DJ that never disappoints. All they’ll need now is some musical instruments to play along with. Tissue boxes and elastic bands make excellent guitars, paper plates with milk bottle tops can be fantastic tambourines, and dried rice or pasta in bottles are the perfect maracas.

Put on a show with shadow puppets

This is foolproof. All you need is a bunch of their favourite Tonies, a bed sheet and a torch. Budding actors can then act out a play with their Tonies behind the bed sheet, with a torch shining from behind.

Outdoor ideas

Puddle jumping

You can have warm baths and yummy hot chocolates when you get home to cosy up again, aaaaah bliss!

Go on a bear hunt

Take advantage of the fantastic story from We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by setting up your very own adventure. Get kids in the mood with some bear snacks, a toy camera and their Toniebox. Choose a woodland with some obstacles so you can all sing along to “We can’t go over it. We can’t go under it. Oh no! We’ve got to go through it!”.

Rain bouncing

Nothing sparks little brains like the wonders of science. Grab some pots and pans, turn them upside down and watch to see how high the rain bounces. Or you could collect the rain instead and measure how much you’ve harvested throughout the day, kiddies can then use the water either in their imaginary play or by watering the flowers and plants around the house. It’s never too early to start them on science projects!

Make mud pies

@playdayswithjess

@playdayswithjess
Do you remember making mud pies when you were a child? If so, you'll know that mud pies are never boring for little mucky pups. Kids are naturally drawn to mud and when we think of all the learning opportunities, it becomes a lot easier to accept any muddy mess! Mud is a brilliant sensory experience and it's an open-ended and inexpensive way to play. Whilst they’re playing, pop the George Pig on the Toniebox for a story about the biggest muddy puddle in the world.

Amy’s favourite Tonie is Matilda. From a very young age, she was utterly obsessed with Matilda. She watched and read it so many times that she practically had the whole script memorised. As she grew older, she remained just like Matilda, a bookworm, a trickster, and a dreamer!
